Phantom is a recent film starring Ed Harris and David Duchovny set on a Russian submarine. Harris plays the captain of a Cold War Soviet missile submarine rushed into a classified mission, where he is haunted by his past and challenged by a rogue KGB group (led by Duchovny) testing a secret new weapon.
The soundtrack is scored by Jeff Rona who decided to record some of the music inside the submarine that the film was shot on. He wanted to “create an alien soundscape” for the score to fit the mood of the film.
While Jeff undoubtedly went to a lot of trouble bringing this score to life it is a melancholy and moody affair without much of a contrast to this theme. An Ocean Away which is the only song on the album is a moody and emotional piece which does nothing to life the mood.
Overall this downbeat and dreamy soundtrack is only suitable for music students who want to make a study of what can be achieved but for the layperson it’s very dull indeed.
