I didn’t read any reviews of this film when it was released in the cinema. I knew from past experience with Winding Refn and Gosling (Drive) that this would be a massively divisive film and I didn’t want any preconceived feelings about it. Continue reading

Hasta La Vista (Come as You Are)
I had a real sense of déjà vu as I first got stuck into this film by Geoffrey Enthoven and when I read the press notes I realised it was because this film is based on the real life experiences of one Asta Philpot which the BBC made into a documentary a few years back. Born with a lifelong condition that causes joint contractures before birth Asta is a strident campaigner for the rights of people with disabilities to enjoy an active sex life. Continue reading
Snitch
At first this tale of successful businessman John Matthews (Dwayne Johnson) trying to help his drug dealing son get out of jail free gives the impression that it is going to be high octane, straight to the action and ridiculous. It becomes clear 30 minutes in however that although it is ridiculous there is not much action. Continue reading
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
There was a time a few years ago when it wouldn’t be Christmas without a Peter Jackson trip to Middle Earth. His legendary Lord of the Rings trilogy was an amazing showcase for new technologies, little known actors, New Zealand landscapes and special effects along with brilliant creative solutions to the problem of how to bring Tolkien’s fantastical land to life. Continue reading
Smiley
“After discovering an urban legend of a demented serial killer, who has nothing but a carved ‘smiley’ on his face, a mentally fragile teen must decide whether she is going insane – or will be the next victim.” Continue reading
Dark Mirror
Dark Mirror has some good original ideas. It supposedly has all its horror in the daylight but this is not strictly true. What would a horror film be without a bit of hiding in the dark during a storm under your bed? Continue reading
Monster Brawl
Set in an unnamed graveyard this is allegedly the ultimate monster smackdown. Mythical monsters and creatures are supposed to fight to the death for our entertainment but it is hard to see the point of this film. Continue reading

Short film focus: Rotoreliefs
If you live in London and have any interest in short films at all then this will hopefully be the start of a beautiful relationship. As an actor/writer based in the capital I have come into contact with many people working in the short film arena and the number of screenings available to watch are enormous. Much like the unsigned band and comedy circuits there is something on most nights of the week in London for you to watch. Continue reading
Smells like old bittersweet eggnog – Lovely Still
This film is a small affair with some great actors. It’s unusual as having the main characters in this love story as a couple who have had free bus passes for quite some time. But the way their love develops with all its little hiccups and misunderstandings and excitement could be played at any age. Continue reading
